The Great Albums: Helmet – Strap it On

It is rare to find a band that is as tight and precise as Helmet. Unfortunately, they are probably known best for the release of the decent album Betty. But their masterwork is Strap it On.

On the surface, you would not think there is anything especially notable about the band. Although a metal band, they acted like regular guys and never participated in the antics that one normally associates with metal. They had some of the greatest riffs you will ever. If you doubt this, simply take a listen to “Repetition” and “Bad Mood”

This is a band that rocked, and in its own way separated itself from other bands of the era. One could say they sound like the Jesus Lizard, but not quite. They even sound like something Steve Albini would have had a hand in.

Oddly enough, many of the songs sound the same, so at first listen, you may find yourself finding the album monotonous, but there will be standouts. Your patience will be rewarded. This is not the heavy metal that Spinal Tap made fun of. This is heavy metal for the regular guy who’s just a little bit pissed off. Pound your fists against the wall to the rhythm of this album, it will be worth it.
